Frequently Asked Questions
You must maintain a cumulative program GPA of no less than the graduation requirements for your academic program. Just keep in mind that credit hours transferred from outside the university will not be used to calculate your IU (Indiana University) program GPA.
You need to complete no less than 67% of all your attempted classes. You can calculate your class completion by dividing the hours that you have successfully completed (successful completion is defined as a grade of A, B, C, D, P, R, and S) by the total numbers that you have attempted and rounding this to the nearest whole percentage. Earned grades of W, F, FX, or I will not count as completed courses.
To see this calculation in action, let us look at an example.
Student A has enrolled in 9 hours for the fall semester. This student has completed 6 hours with a successful grade and 3 hours with an unsuccessful grade. The completion calculation for Student A will be 6 hours/9 hours = .6667 or 67%.
Financial Aid recipients must complete their degree within 150% of the published length of the academic program. The federal regulations require The Office of Student Financial Services to identify students at the point where they are not able to meet the 150% requirement. We will begin to identify students once we calculate that they have attempted 125% of their academic program.
To calculate the degree’s maximum timeframe, you will need the degree’s published length. A bachelor's degree student seeking a 120-credit hour degree will have a maximum timeframe of 180-credit hours. (120x150%=180)
The Office of Student Financial Services will notify students that they are no longer meeting satisfactory academic progress after they have attempted 125% of their published program. For the bachelor’s degree student seeking a 120-credit hour degree, once the student attempts 150 credit hours, they will see the not meeting satisfactory academic progress indicator.
We monitor your academic performance each year after your spring grades are official. You can also request a review at the end of any semester that you attend.
If your academic program is shorter than 24-credit hours, your academic progress is monitored at the end of each payment period.

You can attempt the following semester.
This would be without the benefit of financial aid. You can attend and complete a semester in its entirety and improve your academic performance. Once the semester grades are posted you can request an additional SAP review. Once you are once again meeting academic standards, you can then use financial aid to assist with the degree’s cost.
If you are nearing the maximum timeframe for your degree, using the above strategy will not improve this status. In this case you will need to submit an appeal.
You can submit an appeal.
If you had an extenuating circumstance that prevented you from meeting the SAP requirements, you can submit an appeal.
This email is just to notify you that you are required to meet these standards to continue using your financial aid. There is nothing that you will need to complete or do at this time other than continue to attend your fall classes and complete them successfully.
If you have questions, you can always reach out to our office at finaid@iupui.edu to talk though your concerns.
